The official X account of BNB Chain (@BNBCHAIN) has been compromised, with hackers posting misleading promotions of a meme coin featuring Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). The breach also included fraudulent airdrop announcements offering free rewards, raising concerns among BNB Chain’s global investor community.
Hackers Push Meme Coin & Fake Airdrops
According to Binance’s Chinese social media channel, the compromise was detected earlier today. The attackers shared posts hyping a meme coin linked to CZ, alongside phishing links claiming to offer airdrops and free rewards through Wallet Connect integrations.
The suspicious activity comes just weeks after CZ remarked that meme coins could have “utility,” following the $1 million funding round for Binance’s Giggle Academy project — adding another layer of irony to the attack.
Binance Confirms & Responds
Binance’s social media team quickly flagged the issue and began working with X (formerly Twitter) to suspend the compromised handle and regain control. The company has also filed takedown requests against phishing websites linked to the hack.
CZ Issues Warning: Stay SAFU
Founder Changpeng Zhao addressed the incident directly from his personal X handle, warning users not to interact with the malicious posts:
“The @BNBCHAIN X account is compromised. The hacker posted a bunch of links to phishing websites that ask for Wallet Connect. Do NOT connect your wallet.
Security teams have notified X already, working to suspend the account first, then restore access. Always check domains carefully, even from official handles. Stay SAFU!”
Investor Advisory
Until Binance regains full control of the account, investors are strongly advised to avoid clicking on any links or engaging with promotional posts from @BNBCHAIN. Security experts stress that phishing attempts via compromised official accounts remain one of the most effective ways hackers deceive unsuspecting users.
